2014 Summary: D.J. Johnson
TGB client D.J. Johnson is coming off of a very successful 2014 season. Starting the year in independent ball with the Frontier League’s Traverse City Beach Bums, Johnson simply outdueled hitters. In 27.2 innings pitched, the right-hander posted a 1.30 ERA while racking up 14 saves and 35 strikeouts. The combination of his mid-90s fastball and devastating slider caught the eye of the Minnesota Twins and he signed a minor league deal on July 26th.
Johnson was assigned to the High-A level affiliate of the Twins, the Fort Myers Miracle, for the remainder of the season. Johnson started off hot, opening with seven straight scoreless appearances. The Beaverton, Oregon native finished the season with a 2-0 record and 3 saves, to go along with a 2.84 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings pitched. Johnson proved to be a reliable force out of the bullpen for the Miracle in the Florida State League playoffs, posting 8 strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched while picking up the win in the championship clinching game.
Starting the 2014 season out of affiliated ball, Johnson is looking forward to his first full season in the Twins organization in 2015. The right-hander is determined to build upon his strong showing with Fort Myers and continue making his way up through the Twins minor league system.
